I’m going dry in memory of my father, Kevin. He was the best dad I could’ve asked for. His love for me and my sister, Grace, was abundant. He was a superhero who would do anything for his friends and family. A charismatic person who was too clever for his own good. Although his time on this earth was cut incredibly short, I am beyond grateful to have had such an amazing father, who I will always remember with happiness and affection.
My dad passed away from pancreatic cancer on March 1, 2023. The past two years of my life have been incredibly challenging, but have also forced me to reevaluate and reflect on my life, health, and wellness. This is a turning point I’m not sure I would have reached if I hadn’t been forced through such a traumatic, albeit eye-opening experience.
Drinking alcohol is so globally normalized that most people remain uneducated on the damage it will do to your mind and body. While the occasional drink is nothing to worry about, drinking frequently is a slippery slope that can lead to addiction. Alcoholism affects so many people, including friends and family of those who are struggling. It will deteriorate your body and your mental health faster than you might expect.
It is important for us to treat ourselves with care and respect, and this is of increasing importance as the amount of people suffering from mental health conditions continues to rise. By going dry in January, I will be challenging myself to make healthier choices to benefit myself and my loved ones. I encourage everyone to go dry this January. For those of you that do, I hope it is a rewarding experience that leads you to make better choices for your future.
I love you so much father, and I promise to make you proud.
